Jane Brook Estate Wines is raising a glass to lower energy use
Environment Minister, Donna Faragher today launched a joint project between Swan Energy, Perth Region NRM and Jane Brook Estate Wines aimed at improving winery energy management.
The solar tracker device has been installed at Jane Brook in the Swan Valley to assess the cost effectiveness of renewable energy.
Faced with the need to upgrade its power supply or reduce its energy use, Jane Brook Estate Wines has managed to achieve the perfect blend.
Jane Brook owner, David Atkinson, is well on his way towards achieving his target of reducing energy costs by 30%, with net savings of around $7,000 a year, together with carbon emissions reduction of 30 tonnes.
Energy saving methods employed at Jane Brook to date include the installation of a 5 star heat pump to replace the existing hot water system, changes to winery refrigeration systems, maximum use of off-peak rates, change to energy efficient lighting, timers on fridges and general increased awareness around energy use by all staff.
“It takes about 1.5kW of electricity to produce one litre of wine”, says Keith Pekin, Project Officer at Perth Region NRM.
